How do you encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning? How do you ensure that students reflect on their thinking? How do you make thinking visible in your classroom?

Thinking is a skill, which must be explicitly taught. Teaching students how to think independently increases understanding, engagement, and independence in the learning process. This workshop explores how to use a variety of tools to promote visual thinking on a daily basis in the classroom. Using thinking routines developed from Project Zero at Harvard University, De Bono’s Thinking Hats, and a variety of tools that allow the students the opportunity to work collaboratively to explore sophisticated thinking processes in a supportive atmosphere. We will experiment with these tools and routines to discover how to develop student thinking through a nonjudgmental platform and decide which tool is most appropriate for the task.


Lyneth Magsalin's passion is teaching, inspiring and challenging her students to become lifelong learners. She is a lifelong learner herself. When she began her career as an educator, her emotions mirrored her students in that she was excited, overwhelmed and eager to see how each day would unfold. Being an educator for the past 15 years, she has had the privilege of working with other great educators and she has held a variety roles such as teacher, grade level lead, department coordinator and mentor for both student teaching and internship programs. She has led workshops about visible thinking and co-lead workshops for parents in understanding the PYP framework. She is a grade 5 PYP teacher at Chadwick International in Songdo, South Korea.
